Brewing news Latvia: Brewery Cesu Alus is planning to take 20 pct of Latvian beer market this year

Brewery JSC Cesu Alus, Latvia’s second biggest brewery, in May 2006 sold 4.21 mln litres being an all time record, Baltic Business News released June 05. Last month the company increased beer sales by 33 pct to 3.13 million litres in comparison to May of 2005.

“The first five months were very successful and creative for our company,” says Eva Sietinsone, chairwoman of JSC Cesu Alus. In first five months of the year JSC Cesu Alus has produced and sold in total 10.6 mln litres of beer, up by 18 pct year-on-year.

The sales of cider and alcopops increased by 49 pct January-May of 2006, but sales of soft drinks increased by half.

In first five months of the year sales of juices and juice based soft drinks increased by 12 pct year-on-year.

In total sales of JSC Cesu Alus production in first five months of the year has increased by 23 pct.

Brewery Cesu Alus is planning to take 20 pct of Latvian beer market until the end of this year. Last year Cesu Alus ended with having 17 pct of Latvian beer market, results of Q-1 this year shows, that company had increased its market share to 18 pct.
Latvian brewery Aldaris gained 38 pct of Latvian beer market.

Brewery Cesu Alus also is producing juices, soft drinks and alcopops taking 25 pct of the company’s turnover. Cesu Alus already has 30 pct of the market. Nearly all production of Cesu Alus is sold on the Latvian market, about 1 pct of the production is being exported to Great Britain, under the special brand name of Cesu Special Export beer.

Brewery Cesu Alus turnover last year was LVL 11,87 mln, up by 26,3 pct y-o-y. This year the planned growth will be 15 pct.

Cesu Alus is offering new products on the market. “People in Latvia are not conservative, they enjoy new products and are ready to try new tastes,” says Eva Sietinsone, chairman of the brewery Cesu Alus. This year Cesu Alus is offering fizzy soft drinks with raspberry and melon flavours. Also the production of new drinks, called “near water” has been started as well as lemonades with ginger beer and coffee flavours.

Last year Cesu Alus started production of an English Ale, four new beer brands, Gin with cranberry flavour and other new products.
